The Calgary Stampede is globally recognized as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” In collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of artists, fabricators, and branding and environmental graphic designers, BOND Creative was responsible for the design of the iconic gateway features flanking the entrances to Stampede Park.
BOND transformed singular public art pieces into legible, highly visible gateway markers that integrate the Stampede’s identity with clear wayfinding cues. Each “Gatekeeper” was carefully refined to read effectively from all directions, responding to public access points and sightlines. A smaller-scale “Mini Gatekeeper” was also introduced, creating an engaging, photo-worthy moment for visitors and social sharing.
Featuring bold, animal-inspired forms, the Gatekeepers honour the local landscape, ecology, and history that have shaped Calgary’s culture. Constructed from translucent materials, the structures glow from within after dark, acting as illuminated beacons in the evening. Today, the Gatekeepers stand as recognizable landmarks and contemporary symbols for both the Calgary Stampede and the City of Calgary.
